Open and Asian Tour qualifying

Open and Asian Tour qualifying

Hello hello…

What a week, lots of golf, lots of driving and a lot more to come in the coming days.

I’m currently writing this in a premier inn in Liverpool, will get to that shortly…This week started off at Ferndown Golf club on Monday for regional qualifying for the British Open, after a slow start I managed to battle back and shoot a round of -1 and with only 8 players progressing to final stage, it was going to be tight but things were looking good as I made my way to Newcastle for the Asian Tour, International series qualifier at Close House that was taking place the next day.

I’m currently a member of the Asian Tour but have a poor category so don’t get in the big money events so when I saw they were doing a qualifier it was a no brainer. With an 7hr ish drive ahead of me I was on the refresh button for Open Qualifying while also trying to make it to Newcastle before sunset so I could have a look at the course and try and get some sleep ahead of my 1.20 tee time the following day. Things were looking good until the last three groups dropped me down into 9th spot, only two behind the lead but only good enough for 23rd reserve for final stage. Bugger!

After what has been some lovely weather since I have been back from Abu Dhabi, the round on Tuesday was met with some very Northern weather. Overcast, intermittent rain and generally pretty miserable. After what was a pretty boring start, scoring wasn’t all that low in the testing conditions and when I stood on the 16th tee level par, with the mark at -2 to qualify I knew what was needed. Two birdies in the last three holes put me tied 3rd for the event and within the top 6 qualifying spots, meaning I have booked my place in the Asian Tour International Series event at the end of August at Close House, hosted by Lee Westwood.

Was very happy to qualify and hopefully I can do well and put some money on the order of merit standings to get in a few more Asian Tour events as the year progresses. After a pit stop in Barnsley Tuesday night we made it back to Dorset middayWednesday, after just under 15 hours of driving in 2 and a bit days… weary would be an understatement. After a little bit of coaching and practice I was very happy to get the call from The R&A on the way home from Remedy on Saturday, that I had got a spot in Final open qualifying at West Lancs Golf Club in Liverpool after some withdrawals from the field. So here I am after another lovely drive up North.

Have tomorrow to check out the course and prepare which will be great ahead of a 08.35 and 2.20 tee time. 36 holes in one day for a chance to play in the British Open on Tuesday, lovely. I’m then back down the road to play a Clutch Tour event at Bowood, Thursday/ Friday so will be a rather full on week, but got to be done.

Will keep you posted how I get on as soon as I get a chance, but hope you have all had a good weekend and have an enjoyable week ahead

Cheers Luke
